This week I talk about an unlikely marriage, playing with plastic, and rocking out.  I also review DJ Hero and Legend of Black Heaven.

News
Otaku marries his 2D girlfriend.  Yeah, it's all pixellated roses now, but just wait until he cheats on her with a love pillow.  Then it will get nasty.  Because as experts can attest, love pillows can get quite filthy if not washed regularly.

At least this story gave me an excuse to post yet another video with the Super Mario Bros theme.  This one features tesla coils!

Fun thing of the Episode
AKA the video I forgot to mention
The Muppets: Bohemian Rhapsody
p>

They even brought back the Mahna Mahna guys!

Reviews
DJ Hero

I feel somewhat proud of myself for not referencing Short Circuit 2.
They need to mash up that song with something, pronto.

Legend of Black Heaven
Since the opening theme doesn't give you a good idea of the animation style in the show (or humor), this AMV will have to suffice

Promotional Consideration given to:
RPG Lamer - Releasing another episode of RPGLamer would be yes?  I know you're reading this, Jake.  Get to it. Chop Chop.  Equip your boots of escaping and start table top gaming if you have to.  Lightning Bolt! Lightning Bolt!

Anime Pacific - I know this discussion is a month old at this point, but check out "Who should play Major Motoko Kusanagi in the Hollywood Ghost in the Shell movie?"  as Alex put a lot of work into that article.
And then I added asinine comments, as I am wont to do.

I really don't have a preference at this point as to who should play the Major.  I'd like a Asian actress to play her, given that's her character in the manga and movies, but since this is a major Hollywood movie, that's not going to happen.  Just as long as it's not Kristen Kreuk.  I do think Clancy Brown might make a good Batou, though.

Also, check out Dane's articles on Soviet Animation and Foreign Films.  Good stuff.

Lathers Blathers - After six months, Rich "Lather" Tatarek has come out of hiding and has graced us with another episode.  Fignuts.  I was enjoying having marginally higher feedburner statistics than him.  I guess it goes to show the relative qualities of our shows.  I'd be petty and start arching him but I'm already being petty and arching Anime Pacific, and I don't have time for two archenemies.  Ah well.

This week I talk about the "dark spectre of moe"*, manga possessing your cell phone and I review Ghostbusters for the PS3.

News
According to one poll, otaku guys prefer moe and otaku gals prefer robot shows.  I have obtained a video of the horrible future that will result when the two ideas are inevitably combined to form a marketing juggernaut in Japan:

Shueisha to sell manga on US Phones next year.  If I had bothered to re-read the article before talking about it on the podcast, I would have realized that Shueisha is partnering up with Microsoft to do this, so their manga will most likely not be appearing on the iPhone.  Nuts, and I'm all set to get one when my current contract expires.

Fun Video of the Episode
I didn't actually mention this video in the episode but I think it's fitting.

Ghostbusters - The Premake

Speaking of spooky movies from the 40's, does anyone know where I can find a copy of Gildersleeve's Ghost?  I caught part of it late on Halloween night and I want to see the rest.  There was an invisible woman and a gorilla for some reason.

Review
Ghostbusters: The Game

And for the curious amongst you, this is what the Filmation version of the Ghostbusters was like:

It was an all right cartoon but it just wasn't the Ghostbusters.

EDIT:  In my review I said that Ray Gossett Jr.  did the Ghostbusters theme.  This is wrong.  Ray Parker Jr. did the theme.  I'm not sure why I got those names mixed up.

Zombieland

After watching these movies, it has become apparent to me that what we really need to be watching out for, or listening out for, is British narration.  When you start hearing British narration, RUN!  The best case is that you're stuck in a Planet Earth documentary.  Worst case, zombies.  Either way, you will be eaten.

Bruce Campbell vs The Army of Darkness

Yes, I realize that any self respecting geek has seen this movie already and it doesn't need a review (also, it's over 16 years old), but it was fun to talk about.

Also, on retrospect, that trailer spoils an awful lot.  Oh well.

My Name is Bruce

I also realize that Guan Di isn't technically a zombie, although I refer to him as such in the review.  My bad.

And since I mentioned them, here's some Silly Symphonies:

The Skeleton Dance

Random Fact: That was Disney's first Silly Symphony and it was released in 1929.

The Old Mill

This one was the first Silly Symphony to make use of Disney's multiplane camera.  Back in the day, the Silly Symphonies were testing grounds for new animation techniques, much like how Pixar treats their Pixar shorts that you see before each Pixar movie.

Fantastic Four to get reboot.  Whoever green lit this picture should get a good booting.  To the head.  I guess at least we'll get to see new suits for the FF family, complete with molded nipples.  Yes, Thing nipples.

Okamiden for the DS - Look at him, he's just a little puppy! Who's a good boy?  Who's a good boy?  Fetch!

Also, he's seemed to attracted a Midna type character.  Interesting.  Much more interesting than the mention I gave it in the episode, but to be fair, I hadn't seen the trailer when I did my recording.

This week I rant about Haruhi, gush about Horace, leap through "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", and give you a primer on "Primer".  The reviews are a little spoilerific, so caveat emptor.

News

Futurama original voice cast coming back, for sure this time.

RUMOR: 4Kids for Sale.  Whenever I think of 4Kids, I think of this flash.  The nifty thing is that this was done by TVs Kyle, a frequent contributor to Otaku Generation.  I've played a few of his songs on this podcast too.  Good stuff.

Epic Mickey - It looks epic, to say the least.  I just hope that a lot of the concept art makes it into the actual game.

IT'S HORACE!!!

Commenting on Controversy
I talk about the much maligned Endless Eight saga from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.  I'm not a fan of it myself, but I don't think I'm taking it as hard as Hitler is:

EDIT: Apparently the Endless Eight Saga is coming to an end, after eight episodes.  Who'd have thunk it?  Anyway, it still sucked.

Reviews

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

I haven't been able to time leap myself yet.  I think I need to get some more height when I jump before it will work.  If I leap from my apartment balcony, that should do it.  I'll be back (in time) in a minute ...

Ow.

Primer

I promise if I ever get a time machine, I'll only use it for good.  Specifically, I'll beat the makers of Endless Eight with the Smart Stick™
so they'd have had the good sense to not make Endless Eight in the first place.

Also, after relistening to this episode, I realized that I went into way more detail in my reviews of these movies than I should have.  I guess I need to go back and beat myself with the Smart Stick™

EDIT: I'd also go back and remind myself to include all the videos in the shownotes that I promised in the show.  Here's the Back to the Future comparison:

This week, in honor of reaching a relatively minor and somewhat disturbing podcasting milestone, I review Blue Seed and talk at length about cephalopod anatomy.

News

Futurama - original cast MAY be back, according to John Dimaggio.  Well, he hinted at it anyway. It seems like every time I report a Futurama story, it's retracted the next week.

EDIT: I was right.  The original cast has officially signed on for the new season of Futurama.

Halo Anime on the way.  Here's a trailer:

Here are the trailers for the new Marvel Anime:
Wolverine

Iron Man

Speaking of trailers, here's the next Snakes on a Plane: Hot Tub Time Machine

WARNING: THIS IS THE RED BAND TRAILER.  NSFW

Movie news: Battle Angel Alita, still a go.  So is live action Akira.

Inu Yasha - Final Chapter coming

Science news: Blue dye in M&M's may cure spinal cord injuries

And oh yeah, I didn't mention this on the show, but there's going to be a new World of Warcraft movie directed by Sam Raimi, who is known for various tentacle scenes.  I will watch this over and over again in the theaters if they get Bruce Campbell to play Leeroy Jenkins.  That, or a Panderan.

Also, I would have mentioned this, but several other podcasters beat me to it

Review
Blue Seed.

Despite the presence of tentacled beasts, it's a pretty good show. Check it out.

Promotional Consideration
Destroy All Podcasts DX - They've been recently reviewing failed pilot episodes of shows.  They really need to talk about Lookwell!

Lather's Blather - Thanks to Moonstone of the Animentors, you're witnessing the start of another one sided rivalry.  It will be glorious.  Not really.  For those of you who are interested in how the numbers break down, here's a nifty little chart.  I added in the I Luv The 80's podcast as well since I'm also planning on throwing down with Eeeper, because I'm evil like that.

Greatest Movie Ever - Of course, the Greatest Movie Ever is Rustler's Rhapsody, starring Tom Berenger.

This is my idea of a Canadian Joke

Black Lagoon 3rd Season to be OVA

Bandai reveals license for Kannagi - Crazy Shrine Maidens

Futurama - Coming back with different voice cast?

Summer 2009 Anime Previews (not necessarily in the order we previewed them)

Umi Monogatari - Mermaids that walk on land and have legs. So I'm assuming the fish half is on top.

Aoi Hana - Yuri the only one for me. If only that song was podsafe, then we wouldn't have had to hit the old unicorn well two too many times.

Bakemonogatari - Wherein several school supplies are thrown around.  If only I would have caught a thesaurus I could have remembered to call them school supplies and not school implements

Needless - I'm sure this joke has been already made before, but this show is needless.  It did not need to be made.

Charger Girl Ju-den - If you love Magical Girl shows where the girls wet themselves a lot, you need psychiatric help.

Canaan - Wherein I break out my knowledge of the book of Genesis.  Genesis has a lot more moe in it now than I remembered.

Elementhunters - Wherein we drop our impressive scientific acuity on your asses. CHON indeed.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - We're all shook up.

Plus, apparently the one about the blue koala is called Pénélope tête en l'air.  But I'm sure you'd much rather reminisce about The Noozles

This week I talk about the wonder that is instant ramen noodles and I review Ramen Fighter Miki and Neko Rahmen.  Full show notes can be found at http://upapaddle.com.

The News
Charger Girl Juuden Chan censored.  Not censored enough for my liking.

Mario Mararthon - At first it seemed like a marathon I might be in good enough shape for, but now I'm not so sure.  Still, good on these guys for raising so much money for charity.

Street Fighter IV -- unbalanced?  Dan says yes!

Speaking of Rolling with Sagat ... (nsfw)

I'll count this as the fun video of the episode.

Reviews

Ramen Fighter Miki
Yes, my former job was just as exciting and deadly as this was.

Here's the trailer:

Neko Rahmen

This week I review Hajime no Ippo, an anime about the gentlemanly sport of boxing.  I also talk about Smarties, robot girlfriends and the tentacle monsters that love them.

News
Blue Smarties to go extinct - Drat.  Doesn't Nestle know that the artificial coloring is what made them taste good?

Michael Jackson's arcade collection.  Here's more information on each arcade machine.  Apparently, MJ even carted around a couple of arcade machines to each tour location.  Nifty.

Higher definition moon landing footage found.  Now you can make out the wrinkles on the Man in the Moon's face.  I hope that's his face.

Cardboard Tube Samurai in Tekken 6.  Yes, this is just as important as the moon landing story.

The little engine that could -- the RIAA, defender of the little guys, successfully defended itself against an evil, evil woman who downloaded TWENTY FOUR WHOLE SONGS.  Even though they're getting 1.92 million in damages, they really should have requested the death penalty.   And she has the nerve to appeal.  Ridiculous!

Robot Girlfriend for lonely men - No, I'm not buying one.  Why do you ask?

Sale of rape themed hentai games banned in Japan - In other news, thousands of tentacle monsters are now out of jobs.

Fun thing of the episode
Fish Waterslide

And by that I mean splitting episodes into two and suffixing each part with a letter, as they are wont to do.  Although technically speaking, I recorded both halves at separate times so I probably could have gotten away with calling this a new episode, that is, if it weren't for those meddling kids ....

News

Cross Game
This show gets a little sad, but remember, there's no crying in baseball!

Valkyria Chronicles

Like Saturday Morning Cartoons, I finally have enough episodes to be syndicated. And all it took me was three years. If only I had action figures to sell. That would be glorious.

Local News

Look forward to a "very special" episode of UAP where guest Jake the Root Beer King  will say no to drugs and I'll learn what is ok and what is not okay to put in my mouth. Dane, if you're reading this, whatever you are thinking of, that is NOT okay to put in your mouth.

News

Episode of One Piece illegally copied from Funimation's servers before it was set to stream for free legally.  - No one better be streaming this podcast for free, I'll tell you what.

New iPhone - iPhone 3GS - That's pretty good, but I'm waiting for the eventual iPhone 3GS-US.  Just think of the savings.

New Futurama! Woot! - There will be 26 new episodes, but to be fair, 25 of those will be pure Hypnotoad.  You need to watch all of that to fully appreciate it.

Promos and stuff
RPGLamer - Jake, release another episode already!  With E3 coming up, I need to know which RPGs to focus on.  So far, I'm leaning towards Tales of Vesperia, White Knight Chronicles, and FFXIII for the PS3.

Spiraken Manga Review - with the WHEEL OF MANGA.  I was a little disappointed to find out it's not about a wheel comprised of various volumes of manga that grows ala Katamari Damacy and crushes all who stands in its way, but it's pretty darn good, nonetheless.

For this episode I decided to record a homage (read: blatantly rip off) of the I Luv the 80s podcast by doing my own 80s related show, because it's the smurfy thing to do.

Watch the video below for more information on the Smurfs and Smurfs related video games of the 80.

Smurfs: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle.  This game is unanimously considered to be the best video game of all time by game historians.

So I dusted off an old recording from when I was still in diapers and play it for you to listen to with your ears.  Apparently, I reviewed Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, which was totally excellent and righteous.

I talk about some news stories but I have misplaced the links for some of them so I'll edit this post at a later date.

I also review an anime from the 80's that creeped the hell out of me, with a name that roughly translates to "The Lurking Horror".  Please don't click on the aforementioned link until you have heard the review and have properly prepared yourself, both mentally and spiritually, for the horror that awaits.  The review itself may be a little rambly and nonsensical, but that is only due to the psychological scars that the anime inflicted on me as a kid.  Rest assured, I will ensure that this cycle of forcing children to watch these cruel and frightening shows will continue with my nephkids when they are born (don't know the gender yet).  There's some other stuff in the podcast, but I kinda drifted in and out when recording so I can't recall off hand what it may be.

Oh yeah, I played a promo for the Hello Kitty Island Adventure podcast and one for myself.  Please note that some of the clips I included in my promo may have been taken slightly out of context.  Nevertheless, you should harass the podcasters that those said clips originated from.

So I also played the song King of Kong by Tvs Kyle.

If you want to contact me you can email me at upapaddle@gmail.com, go to http://upapaddle.com or even follow my twitter at http://twitter.com/upapaddle.

If you are feeling especially rambunctious, you can leave a review in the iTunes directory or even send me in content.  If you are looking to lower the standards of your own podcast (if you have one), contact me and I may be able to send you some content.

Oh yeah, the trivia question for this episode was "which movie had the phrase "His elevens are up" and what does it mean?  No fair using Google.

Thanks for listening!

This episode I review Flower, Noby Noby Boy, and ramble about Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li.

News:
Blood: The Last Vampire Trailer

- I bet it'll suck. Ok, that was lame.  Moving on ...

Professor Layton: The First Movie
- This movie better be faithful to the game.  I fully expect at least one scene where Layton and his boy ward swap the furniture in their hotel rooms.

Gokusen: The Movie
- They really need to get a cameo with Great Teacher Onizuka in this, since they're pretty much the same show.  The same awesome show.

Dragon Ball Kai
- Dammit, they're cropping the picture to 16:9 again.  I was looking forward to this, too.

Cow Urine Soda
- suddenly Cucumber Pepsi doesn't sound so bad.

Items of interest:
Don't Sh*t your Pants
Man v Food
I can't help but think the two are somewhat related.

Reviews
Flower

See, I bet you're relaxed now.  I know I am.

Noby Noby Boy ("Taste the Rainbow")

Now I'm just confused.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li

Yes, keen observers, the above clip is not from the movie.  However, it is infinitely better than the movie and much more worth your time.

Up a Paddle - Episode 61 - The Protector of Stuff

This episode I go over the official Up a Paddle 2008 Awards, talk about new years resolutions, read out email correspondence, bandy about a few shoutouts and review The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk.

The Up a Paddle Best of 2008 Awards:
Wherein I discuss the games and movies that won the coveted UAP Seal of Approval.

The royal seal:
Seal of Approval - Fear My Mad MS Paint Skillz

You know you want one.

The Resolutions:
Wherein I discuss my previous New Year's resolution (to learn the words to Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirate's Life for Me - I succeeded - Woot) and I also discuss my resolutions for this year.  One of them would be quite easy if a talented anime podcaster in my area started up a con of his own, possibly centered around 80's anime, perhaps.

Stuff I'm looking forward to in 2009
Street Fighter IV.  It's almost here too.
City Hunter Live Action TV Show - Get Wild and Tough

Stuff I'm not really looking forward to:
Street Fighter the Legend of Chun Li - I just don't see how it could top the finest live action performance of Chun Li ever:

Still better than the Van Damme version

The News
Funimation licenses everything, ever.

Funimation laying off employees, along with Bandai and most other anime distributors in NA.

Nintendo reveals online video service in Japan.

Don't have an engram, man!  Bart Simpson used as a marketing tool for Scientology

The Shoutouts
I gave a shoutout to a lot of the podcasters on the right sidebar there.  If I didn't give you a shoutout or felt the quality of your shoutout was lacking, I apologize.  Please contact me and I'll fix it.  Just so we're clear, I won't play your promo or link you if I don't listen to you regularly and enjoy what I'm hearing.  So if you're on the side bar, I think you're just nifty and other people should too.

EDIT:  I almost forgot this clip:

Oh look, an eagle!

Promo time

I finally attempted a new promo.  Unfortunately, it’s not really usable as the sound quality in this episode sucks.  Let me know if this is good or not.  If it is, I’ll re-record it and post it for download.

I also played promos for Anime Roundtable (www.animeroundtable.com) and Anime Genesis (www.anime-gen.com)

The song played was Mr. Lovely by Beth Thornley

Hey gang, this is just a quick note to say that, no I'm not dead yet and another episode is on the way.  I have some homework to wrap up and then I should be able to record.  The show notes are written though, so it shouldn't take too long.

In the meantime, here's an unrelated video:

See you later this week,
Kent
